...of getting a year older
Sainsbury's has been so kind reminding me. Reminding me that I'm going to be a year older, by sending me a coupon that entitles me a box of Thorntons chocolates to indulge myself on my birthday.
The message seems to continue as I found a wrapped gift on my office desk this afternoon (a long due souvenir from a friend).
As for this coming birthday, I don't know whether it will be a joy, or a disaster - depending on my work progress.
Do pray for my success.

Finally, Lancaster blanketed with snow!
After about 2++ hours meeting with Alan this morning, I think I deserve to loosen up a bit by having some snow fights! - even Alan thought I should do this!
Alex Square was turned into a playground, full with wacky peeps!
To witness how heavy the snow was, see Midah's collections: part I, part II, other photo collections: Azhar, Abg Razman, Fiena, Tina
I got attacked by Idlan! (pinjam sat gambar from abg Razman )
ready to throw some balls and get into a fight! (poor Fiena, the photographer )

The Opening
|
|
... of Photographic Exhibition of Lancaster University Muslim Students, "What makes me laugh?"
by Christine Dawson
in collaboration with Masitah Ghazali, Sara Khan & LU Islamic Society
This project/exhibition is part of Ms Dawson final year art project. When she began her project, she intended to explore issues around 9/11 and 7/7. She wants to put a positive light on the peace loving muslims by using the elements of fun and laughter in the form of photograph and text to display the positive images.
The moment finally came. The door opened at 6 PM and people started to fill in the gallery. At about 6.30 PM, the opening kicked off. Fr. Hugh, the Catholic Chaplain, first greeted the guests for coming. Steve, the Methodist Chaplain, then followed up by praising the efforts that had been put in and emphasised how important the exhibition is especially at this time around. Sara, represented the Islamic Society, echoed the message delivered by Steve and thanked Christine for the opportunity to work together to dispel the false notion of Islam that is being potrayed by the media today. Christine herself, closed off the short opening speech by thanking everyone who involved in the exhibition, and I was touched and moved when she said how she wholeheartedly appreciated the role I played in this project.
To be part of this project was such an amazing experience to me. I have been wanting to do something like this for years, and when the opportunity came about 7 months ago, I knew that was the moment. Above all, it gave me such a good feeling to be involved in creating awareness about Islam. And with the recent publication of cartoon of our beloved Prophet Muhammad, it seems to be for some people, that we Muslims do not know how to have a laugh. So I personally think that, with this exhibition we can make a statement that we can be fun and have a good laugh over things or even at ourselves, so long as they are not insulting or offending our God, prophets and our faith.
This art installation is open for public for 3 weeks from the 28th of Feb - 17th of March at the Chaplaincy Centre, Lancaster University.

2nd "Help Us Help Palestine" Charity Dinner

Bigger and better
***************************************************************
Ok, I know, there are more to this event than those two words.
This year, we managed to hold up a mini exhibition on the timelined history of Palestine, and displayed lots of photos on the cultural, art, places, landmarks of the land. There were stalls as well for henna, and Zaytoun olive oil (for sale). The organisers were more relaxed this year because we went for a caterer who actually did everything from start to finish. We got the chance to greet/mingle/socialise with guests and even enjoyed a spectacular Dabke performance by a team from Manchester.
Those who came to last year's event thought this year's was bigger and professionally done. Most of them liked it as the event was a non-political event and they actually could learn and see about the other side of Palestine. And above all, it was about about helping the children and the medical aid to help the Palestinians.
I personally thought that the event went very well, despite the small hiccup (there was a short circuit). I was glad to be part of it as this will be my last contribution before I leave.

1st International Workshop on Physicality
|
|
It's finally over! I had a very busy week last week. Running around the department like mad, in and out the office (sorry Kev - whose desk is by the door), sorting, organising and preparing things for the workshop. I even had to go to the department on Saturday to get the booklets done.
Anyhow, I personally thought it went ok. Quite anxious before it started because I didn't know what to expect, and what others would expect it to be. But when it ended, everyone just kept telling how great the workshop was. So I was pretty delighted by that.
The keynotes were excellent. John Bowers delivered a very interesting research work, although at some point I (like some others) couldn't see the point of making/producing music which aren't going to be understood (or enjoyed rather) by audience - but still pretty neat! And Caroline Hummels gave her overview on her research work on tangible stuff, which to me, are not just amusing, but also attractive and engaging - though I do not think the tangible stuff will become easily accessible for the public. But it's the idea that is important - which ultimately is about respecting man as a whole, the abilities - what can you do, and about interacton that creates meaning by doing. Her research work, and other people from her previous institute like Djadjadinigrat, Overbeeke's work focus on the improvement in interaction of product design. I read a lot about their work, that sometimes I think I know these people quite well.
Within the 2-day discussion, we talked and discussed a lot about the physicality, the design, mappings, feedback, etc. To me, these four things are the core and vital matters, and I'm quite pleased with the paper I wrote on physicality and it's associations, in which I highlighted the existence and the importance of mappings and feedback in today's artefacts, which give broader meaning and understanding when compared to the times of pre-technology, where understanding was relied just on the artefact's physical-bodily appearances. My next move is to re-work on the paper to put more thoughts on it.
Special thanks goes out to Helen, the Secretary who helped a lot in managing the fees, etc. and of course the rest of the committee. http://physicality.org
Did I mention Bill Buxton was there too?
