PhD Away Day - Day II

View all 25 photos...
Started the day with BIG breakfast - then Palexa and I took a walk along the promenade, taking some pictures, and looking for souvenirs.

The rest of the day was filled with talks by Steve Riches from KBC, and Wookey from Cambridge who talked about patent. We had a break afterwards followed by lunch.

Russel Lock shared his experience on "how to survive your PhD", which i found both informative and entertaining. Group presentations were great.. I wished we had a video camcorder with us. It was hillarious from the beginning to the end. Each group has done a brilliant job!! Well done guys!!

We allocated over an hour before the Closing Statement so that all of us can enjoy Douglas. Some of them went to the Manx Museum, and I learned that the museum catches fire whilst they were there.. - what have you done guys?? heheh.. some went to the city centre, and some just stayed in the hotel chatting..

We wrapped up the program by thanking everyone, selecting our successors and announcing the upcoming events. We left the hotel around 6.30 and started walking back towards the terminal. Some even got there with style -- by taking the horsy-tram

We arrived back at Heysham around 11.30 PM. Everyone looks tired, but they say they enjoyed it very much. The 2-day AwayDay feels like a week.. how slow the time passes in Douglas..

As part of the organisers team, I am very pleased that it turns out to be a successful one

It's the day we've all been waiting for - the PhD Away Day!!! yeay!

Kristof has gone the day before to sort out the hotel. So that left us three to take care of the transports, tickets and the students. Whilst Nic took care of the tickets, I took care of identifying the attendees and Danny got to worry about everything else

We left the department at 12.15 and arrived at Heysham Terminal around 1PM. Although the ferry only departs at 2.15 PM, it is required that all passengers to be at the terminal an hour before the departure time.

It took us 4 hours to get to the destination. I know it sounds like forever -- but I could see from everyone's faces that they enjoyed the journey. and oh, it was so funny when we got to see how they labelled the reserved seating. I kinda expected "Lancaster University" written on the labels, but hey - it was instead "RESERVED SEATING for School Party"!!
The upper deck was so lovely. With clear clouds, blue sky, breezy wind -- I couldn't ask for more

After a short walk along the promenade, and hotel check-in, we welcomed all the attendees and proceeded with a keynote speech by Gordon Blair - the Head of Department. This is followed with Dinner and Quiz - the light-hearted way, as Danny puts it - before calling it a day.

After watching Harry Porter - The Prisoner of Azkaban (which was brilliant!!!), Jun and I decided to have lunch at Subway.
Passing the Market Square, we were surprised to see lots of stalls. The atmosphere was so lively!
We got to see Dutch and French cheeses, German sausages, Britanny biscuits, olives from the sunny south, French honey, Belgium chocolates, Italian leather and lots more!
this event was called Continental Market, that actually has been running since Friday! Thank goodness i brought my camera along!

i really didn't know what else to show my sister when we were in town. we basically covered everything in just about two hours. well, i did intentionally leave out the castle and the maritim museum because the battery was dead - so i see no point of going there without being able to record anything - visually.

good thing that we decided to go into town - and back, on foot. the weather was so nice that i really enjoyed the walk. don't know abt my sister, but i think she thought it was a good way to burn calories!

got home and had lunch. not too sure what to do or where to go next.

but around 8PM the four of us - myself, kak eda, adah n ana, were in the car heading to Glasson Dock. Then passed Lancaster Golf Club, before heading to Forest Hill.

Lancaster is not as small as i thought!!

No place like Lancaster, right Abg Matt? Tue 25-May-2004 18:10

Weekend in Paris II

Chateau de Versailles

View all 61 photos...
We left for Chateau de Versailles around 1100 AM. The weather? it was raining and windy and i found it extremely cold! and the queue was sssooooooooooooooooooooooooo long! just take a look at the pictures.
the Chateau was massive! we spent like a couple of hours touring the Chateau. If you are intersted to know more about this palace, here is the URL:http://www.chateauversailles.fr

for our next destination, i suggested we all should go to Le Defense. I didnt got the chance to go there when i was in paris 3 years ago.
it was a mind blowing looking at the Le Defense itself. it's huge! and the surrounding was just magnificent! i must say i enjoy looking at modern architecture and can;t stop admiring them..

and sadly, the battery went dead, AGAIN, when i was at the top of the building! i blame the cold weather. - i'm now considering about getting another camera. any suggestion??

Weekend in Paris

0500 AM: to keep me awake
Early breakfast at Terminal 3

On Friday morning, I decided to spend my weekend with my mum in Paris. Bought the tickets at 1600PM and flew to Paris on 0630 Saturday in the morning! It's kinda crazy.

Our first destination was The Louvre. I was so excited - after reading the Da Vinci code, visiting the Louvre was like a dream come true. Mona Lisa painting, Salvator Rosa section - it's just like in the book! the greatest thing was, i could imagined where all those things happened. i know i know.. it's only fiction.. but when i read the book, it's really hard for me to tell what is real and waht is not!

anyway, we spent about 5 hours in the museum alone! and yet, we only visited 3 or 4 sections of the museum. oh! i almost forgot. for those who wonder how Mary Magdalene looked like, do check these photos out! unfortunately, the Last Supper painting is now in Italy. quite disssapointed.

afterwards, we visited Notre Dam and a chapel which situated next to the French Judiciary Court. at this point, my camera's battery went dead, so i cldnt capture any pictures
